Recipes to Try for Every Grade


Grade A Light Amber

Microwave Candy

(For adults only to prepare due to handling boiling syrup!)


Coat the upper inside edge of a deep pint or larger microwave safe bowl with butter (this will prevent the boiling syrup from escaping). Put ½ cup syrup in bowl. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes. Remove and stir constantly until it turns opaque and loses its shine. A teaspoon of butter, nuts or peanut butter may be added at this point. Quickly spoon onto waxed paper to cool and harden. Store in an airtight container.


Grade A Medium Amber

Maple Cream Pie

Combine 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 2/3 cup maple syrup in a heavy saucepan. Cook over low heat stirring constantly until boiling. If not starting to thicken, boil an additional minute or two until it does. Pour into pre-baked or graham cracker pie shell. Refrigerate two or more hours. Top with real whipped cream or whipped topping and sprinkle ¼ cup toasted, salted pecans or walnuts on top.


Grade A Dark Amber

Maple Pecan Squares

½ cup butter or margerine

¼ cup brown sugar

1 cup flour

Mix and press into 8”x12” baking dish. Bake 5 minutes at 350º F. Mix following ingredients, spread on top of crust and return to oven.


2/3 cup brown sugar

1 cup maple syrup

2 eggs

¼ cup butter or margerine

2 teaspoons flour

2/3 cup nuts

½ teaspoons vanilla

Bake at 400º F for 4 minutes then reduce to 350º F for 20 minutes.


Grade B

Baked Beans

2 lb. can baked beans

¼ cup onion, chopped

¼ cup diced green pepper

¼ cup ham or bacon

1 Tablespoon prepared mustard

½ cup maple syrup

Blend all together, but sprinkle ham or bacon on top. Bake uncovered at 350º F for 50-70 minutes.
